Three papers published in the last eighteen months have drawn attention to a potential relationship between sleep quality and IVF outcomes. Here's an honest look at what they found — and what they didn't.

What the research found

The studies, all observational in design, found associations between poor sleep quality during the stimulation phase and lower egg yields and, in some cases, lower rates of fertilisation. The researchers proposed that disrupted sleep affects melatonin production, which has a known role in protecting eggs from oxidative stress during development.

"Association is not causation. The women in these studies who slept poorly may also have been more anxious, which itself has independent effects on reproductive hormones."

What this doesn't mean

It does not mean that a few nights of poor sleep during your cycle will meaningfully affect your outcome. It does not mean you should add sleep anxiety to everything else you're already managing. The studies involved significant, sustained sleep disruption — not the kind of restless nights most people experience during IVF.
